How to Make a Woodland Animal Felt Mobile
Having fallen in love with some lovely boutique mobiles with the sweetest little characters – which were unfortunately out of my budget – I decided to make my own woodland animals felt mobile to add a personal touch to little one’s nursery.
Time it Takes to Make: 4 – 6hrs
Skill Level: Intermediate
You Will Need:
- Felt – light and dark green, light and dark browns, light and dark grey burgundy, black, white, yellow and orange
- Embroidery thread in similar colours to the felts
- Printable Patterns:
- Toy stuffing
- Embroidery hoop
- Beads in assorted sizes
Begin by printing out the free templates provided, and cutting the patterns out.
Trace each pattern out onto felt and cut, ensuring you cut out enough pieces for the bodies of each of the animals, and other elements, including:
Sew your detailed pieces in place, including the owl eyes and wings, fox face, white chest and tail, robin beak and wings, and hedgehog face. I have used a straight stitch to secure these pieces in place. Next, sew the bodies together using a blanket stitch, leaving a hole to enable stuffing. Stuff with the toy stuffing, and sew hole shut.
Now sew together the trees, moon and clouds using a blanket stitch, leaving a hole to add stuffing. Stuff with the toy stuffing and sew hole shut.
On the leaves, I have added some veining detail, using a straight stitch – this is optional!
Now, lay out the felt animals and other pieces in the order which you would like them to hang. Thread through the tops of each animal or tree, adding beads in between the element.
For my four outer twine pieces, I have hung two shapes on each, and staggered my spacing of the shapes on the twine.
- Twine 1 – Bead, Cloud, Bead, Hedgehog
- Twine 2 – Bead, Fox, Bead, Tree
- Twine 3 – Bead, Cloud, Bead, Owl
- Twine 4 – Bead, Robin, Bead, Tree
On the central twine, I have used two felt leaves in dark green, then a bead, light green leaves, a bead, moon, and burgundy leaves at the bottom.
Now to create the mobile! Take the inner piece of your embroidery hoop out. On the inner hoop, mark four evenly spaced intervals (at 12, 3, 6 and 9, as if you where looking at a clock). Wrap the twine around each one of your marks; you will have one thread left which will hang down the centre of your mobile (the moon one). To secure your twine, pop the outer hoop back on and tighten. You can glue the twine in place if you want to make it extra secure.
Gather all the threads at the top of the hoop, and knot. Hang the mobile up to check that the hoop is level.
And that’s it – your gorgeous woodland animal felt mobile is complete, and ready to be gift-wrapped… or hung up!
