Tree of Life Wire Wrap Tutorial: Create a Stunning Gemstone Necklace

Strength, power, beauty, growth…. the Tree of Life is a positive, and meaningful symbol that spans many cultures… So there’s little wonder that this gorgeous design is such an incredibly popular focal point of so many jewellery pieces today! This week our jewellery expert, Sarah Millsop, put her wire cutters to work to put together this gorgeous Tree of Life wire wrap tutorial, so that you can get creative at home, and make your own stunning pendant, using semi-precious gemstone beads of your choice.  You could create it as a bespoke birthday gift and incorporate a loved one’s birthstone, or even use a colourful mix of stones to create something eye-catchingly bold and beautiful!

Step 1:

Depending on how full you would like your tree, cut between 10 and the 15 lengths of wire, approximately 15cm long.

Step 2:

Twist all of the wire together to form a ‘trunk’ for the tree. This would only take up a third of the centre of your pendant ring. I like to position mine slightly off centre. You can also give the trunk some twists and bends for a natural finish.

Step 3:

Separate the bottom wire to form ‘roots,’ and the top wires to form ‘branches’. You should twist a few strands of wire together to form larger sections, and keep some thinner. The variations will give you a lovely natural finish! Once you are happy with the positioning of the roots, twist the wire around the outside of the loop 2-4 times. You can pinch these twists with your flat nosed pliers to neaten. Keep the wire close and tight around the form as you wrap around. Trim with your flush cutters, on the backside of the pendant, and tuck in any loose end.

Step 4:

Add a beautiful selection of semi precious chips to the branches before wrapping to secure the ends. You can fill these as much as you like, but remember to keep the flow of a natural tree.  You can bend and shape as you go, and finish the ends in the same way as the roots.

To turn your gorgeous wire work creation into a wearable pendant, open a jumping and secure at the top of the tree, then thread onto a necklace chain.
