Choosing the Right Fabrics:

Choosing the right fabric

Whilst the pattern you choose and the sewing machine you work with are, of course, critical to ensuring you clothes-making projects are a success, so too is the fabric you choose to work with. So how do you ensure you choose the right fabric for your sewing project? If in doubt, always consult the pattern, these usually include lists of suitable fabrics for each aspect of the project, as well as whether directional prints will be suitable, and how much of each fabric you’re likely to need. Another important consideration is not what garment you are making, but how you want the garment to hang. Do you want to achieve a structured silhouette, or a fluid garment that drapes the body? Will the garment be close-fitting, and therefore require extra stretch for comfort and movement? Will there be a great deal of stress on the seams, requiring a tougher fabric to withstand it? Nobody wants to be caught out by a pair of split trousers after all!
