Night Cat Embroidery: Create Your Own Light Box

This beautiful night-time cat embroidery from the fabulous Kelly Anne Jordan incorporates tiny lights as glowing stars, so you can create a gorgeous lightbox effect with your finished embroidery project. Stand it on the windowsill to add a cozy glow on a winter’s evening, or hang it on your little one’s bedroom wall as a miniature night light for when they’re drifting off to sleep!
Time it Takes to Make: 1 – 2hrs
Skill Level: Intermediate
You Will Need:
- Free printable pattern [DOWNLOAD HERE]
- Embroidery thread in grey, white and brick-red.
- Embroidery hoop
- Embroidery needles
- Fabric 10” x 10” Nary blue
- Shadow Box Frame (I used 18cm x 18cm)
- LED lights
- Fabric marker
- Scissors
- Glue gun
- Light tablet
- Acetate
Step 1:
Print out the pattern and trace on to the centre of your fabric; if you have trouble seeing it, you can use a light tablet. Practice the back stitch as shown on the template sheet.
Step 2:
Place the fabric into an embroidery hoop.
Step 3:
Back stitch the moon in grey, the cat in white and the bricks in a brick-red colour.
Step 4:
Remove the fabric from the hoop and iron out any pattern marks.
Step 5:
Place a piece of acetate measuring approximately 7”x 7” on top of the template and secure with low tack tape. My light string has 20 lights on it; I have doubled up the lights by twisting the wire together.
Arrange the lights around the cat and in the moon, and secure them using your glue gun.
Step 6:
Tape the acetate on top of the box frame inner frame to hold it in place, them put the fabric on top and use some bulldog clips to hold in place.
Start with one side by gluing the fabric to the frame inner, ensuring it is taught, then pop the bulldog clip back on as it is drying.
Work around the 4 sides in the same way.
Once it is dry, trim the overhanging fabric and glue the corners.
Step 7:
Place into the frame. Cut one corner of the frame back board to allow the light wire to come through.
Glue the light switch to the back of the frame, and your gorgeous cat embroidery lightbox is complete!
Where will you hang yours?
