Time to Make: 50 minutes
Skill Level: Intermediate
You Will Need:
- Red, green and brown wool
- Felting needle
- Felting sponge
- 3.5cm terracotta pot
- Small heart cookie cutter
- PVA glue
- Craft knife
- Glue gun and glue sticks
- Wooden skewer
How to Make a DIY Needle Felted Heart Plant:
Lay the cookie cutter on the felting sponge and fill with red felting wool. Push the needle in and out to start the felting process, paying particular attention to the outside edges.
Keep pushing the needle in and out until the the heart is completely felted. Pull the heart off the foam, then turn it over, push it back in the cutter, and carry on felting.
Once the heart is completely felted – and about half the depth of the cookie cutter – remove then trim off any stray fibres.
Next, trim a wooden skewer down to around 8cm in length, then push the pointed end through the base of the heart. Remove again, and add a little PVA glue on the end of the skewer into the hole you just created, then push it back in.
Take a thin piece of green wool, twist it around the base of the heart, then felt it to the very end of the heart to secure. Carry on wrapping the wool around the skewer adding a few blobs of glue as you go to hold this in place. Leave the end of the skewer uncovered.
Take a small piece of green wool, place it on the felting sponge, then push the needle through to start felting. Bring the sides towards the middle as you’re felting, and use the needle to help shape the wool into a small leaf.
Attach the leaf to the skewer on the right-hand side with a small blob of glue from a glue gun. Push the needle all the way around the heart several times to accentuate the shape.
Now wrap brown wool around the base of the skewer, and use a glue gun to add a little glue to the inside of the terracotta pot, before placing the wool inside. Use the needle to felt around the skewer until the wool is firm, and about half the depth of the pot.
Now your project is complete, and your gorgeous little heart plant is ready to bring a smile to that special someone’s face!
