Look After Yourself During Mental Health Awareness Week – and Beyond!

This year, they key focus of Mental Health Awareness Week is stress.

Research has shown that two thirds of us experience a mental health problem in our lifetimes, and stress is a key factor in this. If left unchecked, it can have a detrimental effect on our mood, our lifestyle choices, and even our health. Since we’re in the midst of Mental Health Awareness Week, we think it’s the perfect time to help you reclaim control and discover fun (and crafty!) ways to help your reduce stress levels.

Make a Change

We’ve all heard the well-quoted phrase, “A change is as good as a rest”, and there’s a very good reason for that – because it’s true! Sometimes we can become so weighed down by our daily routines and rituals that life can become monotonous and completely uninspiring. Getting stuck in a rut like this can have a big impact on our attitude. Sometimes the only way to shake yourself out of it is to break the routine and immerse yourself in something new! Maybe you’re an avid papercrafter who’s been making cards and scrapbooks for years, but have never picked up a crochet hook. You might know your way around every die-cutting machine in town, yet you’ve never created so much as a handkerchief with a sewing machine.

Well… why not try it out? You won’t know unless you try; you could discover an incredible talent that you never knew existed! At Create and Craft, we’re here to help you out in embarking on a new venture. Our in-depth Crafty Guides are designed to introduce you to and guide you through baking, sewing, papercrafting, jewellery making and knitting. Don’t worry if you’re completely new to something… that’s what makes it so exciting!

Where Should You Begin?

Practise Mindfulness…

Getting swept up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life affects us all. But sometimes in the quest to ‘get it all done’, we can forget to take time out of our busy schedules and invest in ourselves. Mindfulness is the conscious effort to do just that. Forget about bad things that have happened in the past, stop worrying about what may happen in the future, and focus solely on the present moment. Achieving this tranquil, yet composed, state of mind provides an escape from regrets of the past and fears of what might be. It’s actually been proven to be an incredibly effective way to ease anxiety… but we know it’s easier said than done!

Indulge in Scrapbooking…

Project Life provides an ultra-simple, stylish solution for getting your photos off your phone and computer, out of boxes, and into albums! Gone are the days of cutting and pasting, buying oodles of supplies, and spending hours filling albums… welcome to the age of creativity! Experiment with scrapbooking layouts, embellish your photos, add anecdotes and labels, and more.

Free Your Creativity…

Adult colouring books have taken the creative mindfulness market by storm. They encourage you to slow down and enjoy a meditative and relaxing hobby which focuses the mind on the here and now. Many have found colouring to lift their mood, lower anxiety, and help them to unwind at the end of a hectic day. Alternatively, if you’re after something a little more freestyle, you might consider trying your hand at the art of Zentangle.

“What is Zentangle?!” you ask? Zentangle is the art of creating an abstract drawing using a series of repetitive patterns. You can use a background template, which contains pre-arranged lines forming segments that you can ‘tangle’ within, or you can start with a blank piece of paper. Using a fine marker or pencil, you simply produce small, deliberate marks that accumulate to form a pattern. And so your creation is born! At first glance, a completed Zentangle creation can appear infinitely complicated. But once you learn the technique and have a go for yourself, you’ll see just how simple it is to create something impressive. Find out more about what Zentangle can do for you and discover everything you need to start!

Explore Journaling…

Talking out your problems is a fantastic way to work through stressful situations and take the weight off your shoulders. But if you prefer to keep your cards close to your chest, writing things down is the next best thing. The mental and emotional benefits of journaling are so well-documented that it’s recommended by therapists, social workers, and other professionals in the mental health industry. It’s a cathartic release for anxieties that can otherwise build up and overwhelm us if left unattended. Try regularly writing about your day, keeping a gratitude diary, or keeping track of accomplishments you’re proud of. This will serve as a pick-me-up book you can revisit on days when you feel you need a little boost.

Take Time Out…

However you choose to spend the rest of this week and beyond, make sure you take regular time out to escape the daily grind. Engage in something that’s going to allow you the opportunity to relax, de-stress and reset. We’ve no doubt you’ll feel a significant difference. If you know someone who’s regularly stressed out and struggles to unwind, share this blog post with them! Encourage others to make time for a little relaxation, too.

  • I was a sewist until 13 years ago when I discovered paper crafting of all kinds. The act of making something in the moment gives such satisfaction and releases you from whatever the world has you trapped in at that time. The mind in calm and you are at peace with life.
