Love on the Rocks: The Trend That’s Sweeping The Nation!

In an age where more and more of us are occupying our spare time with technology, the latest trend to sweep the nation is one we’ve fallen in love with at Create and Craft: Love on the Rocks! The idea behind the Love on the Rocks trend is a very simple one: crafters use paint to decorate a rock (or lots of rocks!) then hide them out and about in their local area for passers-by to find! If you happen to be lucky enough to find one of these decorated treasures as you go about your day, you can upload your find to one of the many dedicated Facebook groups that have sprung up, and either keep the rock as a keepsake, or take along with you to re-hide it for someone else to find!
These painted rocks have travelled across cities, and even further afield in some cases! Why do we love this fantastic rock painting trend so much? There are so many reasons!
First of all – it’s easy to do! All you need to do is scavenge yourself a smooth stone, then get decorating with acrylic paint. For added weatherproofing, you can complete your rock with a weather-shield varnish before you hide it outside. There are so many different designs you could add, as well as quotes from history, your favourite fiction, or poetry, or perhaps a simple yet beautiful motivational line designed to bring a smile to the face of whoever stumbles across your work!
Apart from the fantastic opportuntiy to indulge in a little creativity that the Love on the Rocks trend allows, we also love it because it’s the perfect excuse to get yourself (and the children!) outside. Make a long walk in the sunshine far more interesting for little minds, by setting them a quest – can you find one of the coveted painted rocks? You could even encourage your children to create their own and hide them, then see how far they get… or whether you can find them again once they’ve been moved on!
Fancy creating your own painted rock design, but need a little inspiration? We asked the lovely Helen Kirkham to have a go at rock painting, and below are some of the amazing Love on the Rocks designs she produced for us, plus a quick and easy step-by-step sunset silhouette rock for you try your hand at!
