Now, it wouldn’t be a true birthday party without a spectacular birthday cake, would it? Our stunning birthday cake was created by none other than the incredibly talented Mich Turner! This ethereal night-sky themed masterpiece is dotted with stars and illuminated by a secret string of lights… read on to discover how Mich created this gorgeous design!
I have to admit, I was a little daunted when I received the brief for the Create and Craft birthday celebrations – think ‘ethereal’, ‘night sky’ and ‘stars’. Initially, this all sounded rather dark, dull and plain but I couldn’t have been more wrong! The rich intensity of the navy blue sugar paste fondant has given this cake a real touch of class and elegance.
I had to make sure it was applied flawlessly so as to avoid any blemishes and patches of icing sugar… so I took plenty of time, care and patience! The top tier is 6 inches in diameter and 4 inches in depth. The second tier I made shallower – just 2 inches in depth (and 8 inches in diameter). The third tier is 8 inches in diameter and 4 inches in depth, and this is separated with a supported 2-inch gap, before the 10-inch base tier.
The gap has been blocked with hand moulded roses in the same inky blue, with ribbon loops in shades of navy and sky blue created using grosgrain, double satin and organza ribbons. I have hand piped vertical ‘strands’ of pearls to resemble the stars on the top tier and continued these down over the tiers to create the flow of the design, and carry the eye downwards. These pearls were piped using a No. 2 nozzle to create different sizes of perfect pearls. The ’15’ was cut in pastillage or gum paste using a blade, and then hand piped and glittered.
The hidden element is the inclusion of 2 strands of tiny battery operated pea lights on copper wire, embedded into a ring of sugar paste fondant between the tiers. These were delicately teased to peer out between the roses and ribbons to shine like the tiny stars in the ethereal night sky! I’m really thrilled with how this design has turned out. Happy Birthday Create and Craft! Tune in on April 19th to see the completed cake live in the studio!
