Father’s Day Message: The DIY Gift That Says It All!

Craft a beautiful Father’s Day message and show Dad how much he means to you this Father’s Day, with a handcrafted gift from the heart! Pyrography is easier than it looks, and lends itself to so many creative projects – just be sure to exercise plenty of caution, as the pen gets extremely hot!
You Will Need:
- A wood burning tool
- A plaque or other piece of wood – I used a cutting board
- Pencil
- Ball Point Pen
- A print-out of your chosen quote
- Masking tape
- A couple of small wooden pegs
- Double sided foam tape or sticky dots
Note: If completing this project with children, make sure there is strict supervision.
Step 1:
First, prepare your piece of wood by giving it a light sand to remove any irregularities. Take the print-out of your quote and, using a soft pencil, scribble over the back, making sure you cover all the areas you want to transfer.
TIP: You can also use carbon paper, if you have it!
Step 2:
Use masking tape to secure to the board. Take a ball point pen a trace around the letters, pressing as hard as you can.
Step 3:
Heat up your wood burning tool, and select the nib you want to use. I used a combination of a flat nib and a pointed nib for the smaller letters. Practice on a scrap piece of wood first; the trick is not to go too fast, and to make sure you apply even pressure. If your nib gets caught in the grain of the wood, use small dots until you achieve a line. It’s a good idea to wear a face mask during this process, as there may be fumes, if the wood has been treated.
Step 4:
Use sticky dots to stick a couple of pegs to the board. You can also use superglue, but sticky dots allow you to move them around for different photos.
Step 5:
Once complete, simply add your favourite snap to the piece, and give your handcrafted Father’s Day message to Dad, to make his day!
