Holiday Hoop Art: Free Embroidered Landscape Pattern

Since so many of us haven’t been able to travel abroad this year, we asked the incredibly talented Kelly Anne Jordan to take us on a little holiday with her next project! Check out her stunning embroidered landscape piece, which transports you to a tropical island with a gorgeous beach surrounded by deep blue ocean. If you’d like to learn how to create this breathtaking scene for yourself, follow Kelly’s step-by-step tutorial below, and create your own piece of ‘holiday’ hoop art to give as a gift, or decorate your own home with.

Time it takes to make: 24 hours

Skill level: Advanced

You Will Need:

Step 1:

Trace the outline of the pattern onto the centre of your fabric with a Frixion Pen or fabric marker. For this project I recommend practicing a straight stitch, back stitch and french knot.

Step 2:

Place the fabric into an embroidery hoop.

Step 3:

To start the island, use some green wool to build up that area.

To give the island more dimension, continue working the wool over itself to create the hill effect.

Step 4:

Working with 2 strands, stitch between the edge of the wall and fabric to create a coastline. I have used straight stitch for this.

Step 5:

For the areas that curve in towards the island, stitch in a sand colour to create the look of sand. I have used two strands and a mixture of the backstitch and straight stitch for this.

Step 6:

To create the look of trees on your island, use the French knot over the complete surface of the wall.

You can work in several tones of green to give a more realistic look to your island.

Step 7:

Use white to start your water line edge only a few rows deep, then move on to your lightest blue, building up the rows from the island.

Follow the pattern lines and change your tone of blue as you get to each new section, until you get to the outer which will be your darkest blue.

Step 8:

Remove the fabric from the hoop and iron out any pattern marks. Before placing the piece back in to the hoop, draw around your hoop on to some felt and cut out. Now put your piece back in to the hoop and ensure that it is taut.

Step 9:

Trim off the overhanging fabric, so that there is enough to adhere this to the inner hoop.

embroidered landscape tutorial step

Use a glue gun to adhere to the inner hoop, and then adhere the felt backing to the back of the hoop to hide the back of the stitches.

Cut a strip of felt approximately 2” x 1”. Apply some glue at each end and place on the back at the top of the hoop. This will act as a hook for hanging.

Competed project on wall

Now your stunning embroidered island landscape is complete, and there’s nothing left to do but pick the perfect spot for it to hang!
