Check out Penelope Quinn’s tutorial below, and create a stylish piece of home decor that’s bound to receive compliments.
You Will Need:
- 250g of air dry clay
- A piece of hessian (or other texture such as lace)
- Craft knife
- Metal ruler
- Square piece of card 15 x 15cm
- Mod Podge
- Wooden skewer
- Rolling pin
First, roll out your air dry clay to around 1 cm thick. Place the hessian over the top of your clay, and use your rolling pin to apply firm pressure so it leaves an imprint. You could also use lace or a doily for this step.
Next place a 15 x 15cm square card on top of your clay, and use this as a guide to cut a square from your clay with your craft knife.
Find the middle of your clay, and make a small mark. Place a folded piece of baking paper in the middle of your clay. Gently fold up the bottom corner to the middle. Fold over the left and right corners to the middle too, and press down gently. Don’t worry about all the cracks, we’ll fix them up later!
Fill your envelope with ice cream sticks or wooden spoons. This will help form a cavity we can put our flowers in.
Now it’s time to clean up the joins. Start by scoring the joins where they clay overlaps with the sharp end of a wooden skewer, and then using the end to smooth it again. This will help the clay stick to itself, so it doesn’t crack when drying. Wet your finger with water and gently smooth over any cracks or rough edges.
Leave to dry overnight. When it has finished drying, go over lightly with sandpaper to remove any finger marks or any rough edges you’ve missed.
Give a coat of Mod Podge to seal and, once dry, fill with your favourite dried flowers/ Voila – your super-stylish alternative to hanging plant pots is ready to hang… or gift!
