DIY Diffuser Necklace: Crafting Comfort and Calm

Penelope Quinn’s latest project is a fantastic one to get the kids involved in whilst they’re waiting to head back to school. This DIY diffuser necklace tutorial takes you step-by-step through how to create this piece of handcrafted jewellery that’s not only pretty to wear, but can also be used as a diffuser for your favourite essential oil, to help bring a sense of comfort and calm! Kids will not only love making these aromatic scent charms – but they’ll enjoy wearing them too.
You Will Need:
- Air dry clay
- A small lid or protractor
- A few utensils to create patterns on the clay – this could be stamps, a skewer, and 3d diamontes.
- String or twine
- Pen knife
- Food colouring in different colours
- Fine paintbrushes
How to Make a DIY Diffuser Necklace:
Step 1:
Roll out your air dry clay to about 1cm thick. Use a lid or protractor to draw out some circles around 7cm in diameter. Cut these out with a pen knife.
Step 2:
Next, make a small hole in the top of the circles, and use a skewer to make a hole through the clay, as well as mark out some patterns in the clay. Get creative! You could even experiment with letter stamps, or fabric stamps – whatever you like!
Once the circles are complete, make a few small balls with the clay too, and pierce a hole through the centre of each. Leave these beads on the skewer while they dry.
Leave everything to dry overnight.
Tip: If it’s very humid, dry in the oven on a low heat, for 30 minutes.
Step 3:
Now it’s time to decorate! Experiment using food colouring in different colours.
You could try watering down for different effects, and you can also layer on colour once your first layer dries.
Step 4:
Wait until dry, then use the small hole in the side to drop your essential oils in.
Now lace onto a piece of twine, and finish with a couple of the small balls.
Wear around your neck, gift one to a friend as a thoughtful gift, or hang a few around the house, and enjoy the scent!
