How to Crochet Succulents – by Charlie Mumford

If you’re not particularly green fingered and plants in your house don’t tend to last too long, then a crochet version might be for you. No need to water these little cuties!

Time to Make: 30 minutes per plant approximately

Skill Level: Confident Beginner

You Will Need:

Abbreviations:

  • Tr – treble crochet
  • Dtr – double treble crochet
  • Trtr – triple treble crochet
  • DC – double crochet

Top Tips: Place a stitch marker at the beginning of each round and, to make the leaves pointy, pinch the trtr, and pull it gently.

Step 1 – Succulent Top Layer:

Work a magic adjustable ring

12dc into the ring

*1Dc into first stitch of the round

1tr, 1dtr, 1trtr, 1dtr, 1tr all into the second stitch

1dc into the third stitch*

Repeat *to* 3 times.

Slip stitch into the beginning of the round and fasten off.

Step 2 – Succulent Middle Layer:

Work a Magic Adjustable Ring

9dc into the ring

2dc into the each stitch around (18 stitches)

*1dc into the first stitch

1tr, 1dtr, 1trtr, 1dtr, 1tr all into the second stitch

1dc into the third stitch*

Repeat *to* 5 times

Slip stitch into the beginning of the round and fasten off.

Step 3 – Succulent Bottom Layer:

Work a Magic Adjustable Ring

9dc into the ring

2dc into the each stitch around (18 stitches)

1tr into each stitch around (18 stitches) and join last stitch to the first with a slip stitch

*1dc into the first stitch

1tr, 1dtr, 1trtr, 1dtr, 1tr all into the second stitch

1dc into the third stitch*

Repeat *to* 5 times

Slip stitch into the beginning of the round and fasten off.

Now stack your layers, and sew them together through the middle with one of the yarn tails – make sure to weave in any loose tails!

Now, lightly colour the edges of your leaves with your chosen colour of chalk pastel. I also added a bit of colour to the centre top piece with my chalk.

Now you have your finished crochet succulent! They look great in a plant pot, or can also be added as decorations to other crafty endeavors – trying using them to embellish wreaths, hats and other projects!
