Crochet Pumpkin Basket: Perfect for Your Halloween Haul!

It’s time to prepare your little trick or treater for a night of doorstep-hopping in the name of Halloween – and what better way for them to store their Halloween haul, than in this creepy crochet pumpkin?! Alternatively, if you’ve no mini goblins in residence, you could instead serve up horrifying handfuls of candy in this crafty crochet project, when your own doorstep is graced by ghouls on October 31st! You Will Need:

Skill Level: Accomplished Beginner/Intermediate

Abbreviations:

  • adjustable slip knot = magic ring
  • ch = chain
  • ss = slip stitch
  • dc = double crochet
  • 2dcinc = 2 double crochet into next stitch
  • dc2tog = double crochet two stitches together
  • htr = half treble crochet

Top Tip: As the spiral method is used (no joining with a ss or making 1ch to start round), place a stitch marker at the beginning of the first round and move it up every row.

Crochet Pumpkin Pattern:

Base:

With orange yarn, make an adjustable slip knot and ch2 (turning ch).

Rnd 1: 8dc into first ch. Tighten slip knot.

Rnd 2: 2dcinc in every stitch around (16dc).

Put a marker in the stitch on the hook to indicate start of the round.

Rnd 3: (1dc, 2dcinc) around (24dc).

The round is complete when the dc is in the last stitch before the dc with the marker in.
Rnd 4: (2dc, 2dcinc) around (32dc)
Rnd 5: (3dc, 2dcinc) around (40dc)

Ss into next dc and fasten off.

Side:

With orange yarn, make an adjustable slip knot and ch16.

Turn chain over to reveal the three parts of every stitch, with the inner part looking like a spine.

Work dc into chains using this inner part of the stitch indicated.

Row 1: Make 1dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1dc in each of 14ch (15dc).

Row 2-5: 1ch, 1dc in the very first dc at base of ch and 1dc in each dc across picking up both sides of the stitch (15dc).

Row 6: 1ch, working in back loops only of each stitch, dc across. This creates a ridge line.

Row 7-11: dc across.

Repeat rows 6 to 11, six more times.

Fasten off, leaving tail of yarn for sewing. Sew up side seam to resemble a ridge, by picking up both parts of stitch on one side and the back loop only of stitch on other side.

Thread a length of yarn around one end using a running stitch, and pull to gather.

Make the hole the same size as the base. Sew base to gathered bottom so it looks like a dome.

Facial Features:

Mouth:

With black super chunky yarn, make an adjustable slip knot and ch30. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Form the chain into a zigzag shape, and sew to lower part of pumpkin pot to form mouth.

Eyes:

With black super chunky yarn, make and adjustable slip knot and ch7.
1dc in 2nd ch from hook and 1dc in each of the remaining 5 ch (6dc).
Fasten off leaving a tail of yarn for sewing. Sew eyes in a slanted angle, as shown.

Border:

Join black yarn at top centre back of pot and work 48dc evenly around the edge (this works out as 1dc in the end of every row). Ss to first dc to complete round.

Next round: (1dc dc2tog) around, ss into next st and fasten off.
Sew in ends.
