Crochet Ice Pop Cover Pattern: Fun in the Sun!

When the summer heat hits, there’s nothing nicer than enjoying a cold ice lolly in the garden… although clinging onto a freezing cold ice pop can be a bit of a pain, especially for little hands. Which is why we just love this latest crochet project from the clever Mandy Cameron: not one adorable crochet ice pop cover, but TWO, that are not only great fun, but also very handy! Say goodbye to freezing cold fingers and hello to fun in the sun, with these fantastic little projects that you can create quickly and easily at home, with our free patterns below.
You Will Need:
- 25g 100% cotton yarn in green
- 25g 100% cotton yarn in yellow
- 25g 100% cotton yarn in purple
- 25g 100% cotton yarn in pink
- 4mm hook
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- Stitch marker
Skill Level: Easy/Intermediate
Abbreviations:
- adjustable slip knot = magic ring
- ch = chain
- tc = turning chain
- ss = slip stitch
- dc = double crochet
- dc2tog = double crochet two stitches together
- 2dcinc = 2 double crochet into next stitch
- htr = half treble
- tr = treble
- 5trpop = 5 treble popcorn stitch
Crochet Dinosaur Ice pop Cover:
Top Tip: As the spiral method is used (no joining with a ss or making 1ch to start round), place a stitch marker or piece of yarn at the beginning of the first round and move it up every row.
Using green, leaving a 15cm/6” approx. tail of yarn, make an adjustable slip knot and ch19.
Row 1: 1dc into second ch from the hook. 1dc in each of remaining 17ch across (18dc)
Row 2: Keeping right side facing you, bring the first dc around to meet the last dc (pic 1) to make a circle and work 1dc. Place row marker as this is now the start point. 18dc around (18dc)
Row 3: Keeping green attached, join yellow with a half knot on the green strand. With yellow, make 1ch, 5trpop, leave yellow attached and with green work 1ch and 17dc to end.
Row 4-7: Dc in every stitch around (18dc)
Row 8: 1dc in green, bring up yellow strand on the inside (not too tight) and work 5trpop, using green make 1ch, 17dc, place marker to indicate start of round.
Repeat Row4 to Row8 for 3 more times (pic 4 shows twice more) keeping yellow popcorn stitch in a straight line and adjusting row marker accordingly.
Row 24: 2dc, (dc2tog, 4dc) twice, dc2tog, 2dc (15dc)
Row 25-26: Dc around
Row 27: dc2tog, 5dc, dc2tog, 6dc (13dc)
Row 28: With yellow make 1ch, 5trpop, with green 5dc, dc2tog, 5dc (12sts)
Row 29: 5dc, dc2tog, 5dc (11dc)
Row 30: 5dc, dc2tog, 4dc (10dc)
Row 31: Dc around (10dc)
Row 32: With yellow make 1ch, 5trpop, with green dc to end (10sts)
Row 33: Dc around
Row 34: (dc2tog, 3dc) twice (8dc)
Row 35-38: Dc around
Ss into next dc and fasten off leaving tail of yarn. With yarn tail, thread through top of each dc and pull tight to close the opening. Sew in end to secure.
Finishing:
At the beginning of first round, use tail of yarn to sew together end of row 1 to beginning of row 1 and sew in end to secure. Sew in all other loose ends.
Crochet Mermaid Ice Pop Cover:
Using purple, leaving a 15cm/6” approx. tail of yarn, make an adjustable slip knot and ch20.
Row 1: 1dc into second ch from the hook. 1dc in each of remaining 18ch across (19dc)
Row 2: 1ch, 1dc in first st at base of ch, (miss 2dc, 5tr in next dc, miss 2dc, 1dc) three times
Row 3: 3ch, 2tr in st at base of ch, (miss 2tr, 1dc in next tr, miss 2tr, 5tr in next dc) twice, miss 2tr, 1dc in next tr, miss 2tr, 3tr in last dc stitch
Row 4: 1ch, 1dc in st at base of ch, (miss 2tr, 5tr in next dc, miss 2tr, 1dc in next st) three times (pic 2 shows half way through row 4)
Repeat Row3 and Row4 for four more times. Piece should measure 4¾” or 12cm approx (pic 3). Fasten off purple.
Fold in half and sew side seam.
Tail Fin:
Row 1: Join pink yarn to one end and working through both thicknesses of first dc row, work 9dc across the tail end
Row 2: 3ch, 1tr in st at base of 3ch, 2tr in the next dc, 1tr in each of next 2dc, 1dc, 2tr, 2tr in each of next 2dc
Row 3: 3ch, 1tr in st at base of 3ch, 2tr in each of the next 2tr, 2htr in next tr, 3dc, 2htr in next tr, 2tr in each of next 3tr
Row 4: 3ch, 1tr in base of 3ch, 2tr, 2tr in each of next 2tr, 2htr in next tr, 2htr, 3dc, 2htr, 2htr in next tr, 2tr in each of next 2tr, 2tr, 2tr in last st
Finishing:
Sew in all other loose ends.
