Chocoholics Rejoice: It’s National Chocolate Cake Day!

We couldn’t believe our eyes when we stumbled across this fantastic excuse to indulge in chocolate cake for the sake of nothing more than celebrating the cake itself! That’s right – on January 27th, it’s none other than National Chocolate Cake Day.

And if you’re desperate to celebrate (and I promise you, we at Create and Craft HQ certainly are!) then we’re here to make it as easy as pie for you. Or rather… a total piece of cake!

Before we dive into our tastiest chocolate cake recipes, we thought you might like to know a few fun facts about chocolate itself, which might explain just why we adore it so much!

The smell of chocolate depresses theta brain waves, which triggers relaxation.

There have been many studies on the effects of chocolate on our minds… but it doesn’t take a scientist to confirm that chocolate makes us feel good, right? Eating chocoloate has been shown to encourage the release of endorphins, which boost our sense of wellbeing. The smell alone has been shown to depress theta brain waves, which are linked to attention. The more complex a task is, the more theta waves are produced; scientists have suggested that when we smell chocolate our minds are drawn away to thinking about food, baking and eating, and therefore we pay less attention to the environment around us, and become more relaxed. We’re not complaining…

Eating dark chocolate may help to reduce the risk of heart disease.

Sound too good to be true? We love sentences like this! Scientists have discovered that dark chocolate may help to improve the flexibility of arteries, and prevent cholesterol from building up. Dark chocolate is also packed with antioxidants, which can help to mop up free radicals… in fact, scientists are investigating numerous potential health benefits, which even include improvements in cognitive function! So if you’re cramming for an exam, maybe you should cram in some dark chocolate too? It’s worth a try!

In 2013, Belgium issued a limited edition of chocolate flavoured stamps.

Belgium, you rock! The 538,000 stamps that were produced featured a picture of chocolate on the front, and the essence of cacao oil in the glue at the back. And they didn’t stop there – the ink used to create the image on the front was chocolate-scented too! How many extra postcards do you think were sent from Belgium that year?

When it Comes to Coughs, Chocolate Is More Effective than Codeine.

The best cure for coughs may actually be… chocolate? It’s true! Numerous studies have shown chocolate to help remedy coughs and the resultant sleeplessness within days. Researchers claim that it’s the coacoa, which reduces inflamation and irritation in the throat. So if you’re feeling under the weather with a cough that hot lemon and honey simply isn’t budging, perhaps it’s time to hit the hard stuff… chocolate, that is!

Hot Chocolate Tastes Better in Orange Cups!

How you serve food and drink can actually affect they way we perceive it to smell and taste! Scientists from the Univeristy of Oxford in the UK and the Polytechnic University of Valencia in Spain, discovered that hot chocolate tastes better in orange cups. During the same study, white cups were found to be the most detrimental to the perceived flavour and aroma of the hot drinks inside them. So if you’re sticking the kettle on, make sure there’s a coloured mug at the ready, whatever you’re drinking!
