Creativation 2018: The Trends from Phoenix [Sara Naumann]
Imagine aisles of craft supplies, booths packed with fresh new designs and product releases…complete with demos, and the chance to connect with the companies who create all the craft supplies we love to use. That’s Creativation in Phoenix, Arizona—the trade show for the craft and hobby industry. And Sara Naumann was there, ready to report back on the hottest new trends set to rock the crafting world in 2018! Read on to discover what Sara learnt about what’s in store…
Open only to those on the business side of the creative market, Creativation holds a lot of fascination for crafters. Curious about the upcoming looks and styles you’ll see in the crafting world in 2018? Then join me for a trendspotting look at some of the favourite Create & Craft vendors who exhibited there!
From flower stamps to crepe paper flowers, blossoms bloomed on the show floor. Altenew President Tasnim Ahmed says the company’s 3-D layering dies are a customer favourite, offering a fun technique twist to a classic floral motif.
Metallic foiling is popular in store-bought stationery; crafters can get the look with either hot foiling machines, foil sheets and laminators, or by using a simple double-sided tape or even glue stick with foil sheets. We’ve enjoyed the versatility of application, now we’re seeing many more types of metallic foil colours and finishes. No longer limited to gold and silver, we’re seeing reflective foil, copper foil, bronze foil, and bright colours from purple to hot pink. Either add your own foiling, or let manufacturers like Hunkydory do the work for you!
The classic seaside theme gets a fresh look this year, with soft blues and turquoises paired with vintage white and off-white, for a lightly distressed look. Images include seashells, jellyfish, mermaids, anchors and seahorses, all with a soft, updated style.
It’s the crafter’s ongoing challenge: With so many new releases in addition to our own existing stash, where are we to put everything? Deflecto usually has just the thing to help us keep our craft supplies tidy and organised.
Cardmakers often struggle to find just the right message for their designs. Fortunately, stamp companies are ready to respond with perfectly-crafted messages designed to inspire. Debbi Moore’s Life Quotes offer beautifully scripted words, quotes and sentiments for cards and more.
One thing I couldn’t help but notice on the show floor this year: Optimism. Manufacturers are excited about their latest offerings and have been working hard to create fun, innovative and inspiring releases for crafters.
I felt a lot of positive energy in Phoenix this year—and I’m also looking forward to seeing how crafters like you will enjoy these new trends and styles!
